Read the news with no connection
The moments when you have the most time to read are often the ones with the least signal. A reader that can only show what it just downloaded is useless exactly where it would help most.
Download before, not during
Feedrion stores your feeds' articles in a local database on the device, ahead of time. Open the app with no network and the list and the text are already there — this is not a display cache that expires, it is the content itself.
On Android, an optional background sync refreshes that store periodically, so the morning commute finds the night's articles. It lives in the Offline screen and stays off until you turn it on.
What you do offline is not lost
Marking an article read, archiving it, saving it: offline, those actions go into a sync queue instead of failing. As soon as the connection is back the queue drains and your other devices see the same state.
That is what avoids the usual offline trap: reading thirty articles underground and finding all thirty unread when you come back up.
In the browser too
The web app installs like an application (a PWA) and works offline on the same principle, with the same local database. A link opened with no network opens the app and the content it already holds, not the browser's “You're offline” page.
Audio reading works on already-downloaded content as well: listening to an article then needs no connection at all.
Getting ready for a trip
- Open Feedrion while you still have signal, long enough for the feeds to refresh.
- On Android, turn on background sync from the Offline screen if you would rather it happened by itself.
- On the move, read normally: the list, the text and the audio all come from the device.
- When the network returns, read and archived articles sync without you thinking about it.
Offline is not a degraded mode: it is the same application, minus the network.
